Calculating The Cleanie – GW13

Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline the best options on a weekly basis.

We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek.  Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!

Top Tip: AFC Bournemouth

The Team: This week we’re backing Bournemoth for our guaranteed clean sheet as they visit Swansea.  Bournemouth have kept two clean sheets in as many gameweeks; their clean sheet in gameweek 12 was even more impressive given they were down to 10 men for 45 minutes with Francis seeing red.

The Players: The ever reliable Begovic looks to be finding his feet in the Bournemouth goal having spent the past couple of seasons on the Chelsea bench.  Affordable defenders DanielsSteve Cook, and Ake are all set to play, with Adam Smith likely to deputise for the suspended Francis.  It might not just be a clean sheet you get from your Bournemouth defenders this week, Daniels and Steve Cook have both chipped in with a goal a piece this season.  Furthermore, if your Draft Fantasy Football league uses the Fantasy Premier League bonus points system, then it will be interesting to know that the Bournemouth defenders often pick up bonus points; in particular Daniels and Ake.

The Opposition: Swansea are sweating over the fitness of their star front man Abraham who’s stiff back might well keep Swansea’s only real attacking outlet for this season out of the fixture.  Without Abraham there will be genuine concerns among the Swansea fans about where the attacking threat and goals will come from as Abraham has accounted for 4 of Swansea’s 9 goals.

The Prospects: Looking forward to future fixtures, Bournemouth have an excellent run coming up.  Burnley, Southampton, and Crystal Palace are the next three opponents and all three of these fixtures offer a real opportunity for future cleanie points.

Looking Elsewhere

There are potential clean sheets in big teams this gameweek; with openings in the Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal defences.  This is due to opportunities being handed to returning players by the injuries to established players.

Chris Smalling (Manchester United): with injuries to Jones, Smalling took his opportunity well picking up a goal.  Smalling is unlikely to be owned by rival managers and presents a good opportunity to pick up a clean sheet against Brighton.

Vincent Kompany (Manchester City): with Stones limping off it is likely that Kompany will retain his spot in the starting 11; particularly having kept a clean sheet last week.  With Huddersfield the opposition, it would be a safe punt on Kompany for a cleanie.

Shkodran Mustafi (Arsenal): returning from injury last week, Mustafi kept a clean sheet and weighed in with a goal to lead Arsenal to a comfortable 2-0 win over North London rivals Tottenham Hottspur last weekend.  Having been injured Mustafi is likely to be a free agent, and having kept out Harry Kane last weekend, you would confident that Arsenal will be able to contain the Burnley attack this gameweek.

If this sounds like too much effort, we would highly recommend using an online platform from either the guys at Draft Fantasy or Fantrax.   Draft Fantasy uses a scoring system similar to the standard Official FPL game, where as Fantrax mainly uses the more intelligent scoring system made famous by Togga.  Both offer potential for end of season playoffs, as well as many other options for customisation!
