Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline the best options on a weekly basis.
We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek. Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!
Top Tip: Everton
The Team: This week we’re backing Everton for our guaranteed clean sheet as they host Swansea. Everton have had quite a revive over the past four weeks; and in the process they have kept three clean sheets to boot!
The Players: Part of the resurgence has come about with predominantly reserve defenders. Cuco Martina, Jonjoe Kenny, and Mason Holgate are all players that Draft Fantasy Football managers wouldn’t have given much consideration to. Yet, these three chaps have averaged 5.08 Fantasy Premier League points per game between them over the past four gameweeks. Kenny has even contributed an assist!
The Opposition: Swansea have been perennial strugglers this season. Goals have been somewhat of a premium. Top scorer Tammy Abraham, who currently ranks in our ‘Cold’ player ranking list in our ‘Hot or Cold‘ feature, has not scored in 9 gameweeks; contributing only 2 assists in the same time frame. The man who replaced Abraham in the starting lineup, Wilfried Bony, is hardly prolific in his goal scoring returns; 2 goals this season. Bony also limped off during gameweek 17.
The Prospects: Looking forward, Everton have senior defenders (Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman, and Michael Keane) returning to full fitness. A short term option would be to go with Kenny, Martina, or Holgate; with the long term to pick up one of the senior players. The fixtures are not horrendous, although Everton entertain Chelsea after Swansea, the Toffees then visit West Brom and Bournemouth over the busy Christmas period.
If you don’t fancy Everton, the next obvious choice for defensive returns is to look towards Watford who host Huddersfield.
Watford have failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous 4 gameweeks, however the forthcoming fixtures present Watford the opportunitity to build on the 3 clean sheets they have kept already this season. Over the coming Christmas and New Year period Watford play; Huddersfield (h), Brighton (a), Leicester (h), and Swansea (h). It would be fair to expect possibly 3 clean sheet returns from these four fixtures!
The other stumbling block is what players are likely to be available in your Draft Fantasy Football league. Well, its likely that you could have a full range of Watford defenders to choose from. Christian Kabasele is a reliable bet as is Adrian Mariappa; particularly as Marvin Zeegelaar is suspended until Boxing Day. Kiko Femenia sat out the last two gameweeks with a muscular injury, and in Kiko’s absence Daryl Janmaat bagged a goal.
Huddersfield have struggled to score away from home this season, their 3 away goals were scored in the opening game of the season against a very poor Crystal Palace team. Steve Mounie is the main danger-man, but his four goals (scored in 2 games) over the previous 17 games should not strike fear into the hearts of Draft Fantasy Football managers owning a Watford defender.
