Calculating The Cleanie – GW26

Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline the best options on a weekly basis.

We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek.  Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!

Top Tip: Bournemouth

The Team: This week we’re backing Bournemouth for our guaranteed clean sheet as they host Stoke.  It would have been a bold call to go for Bournemouth until they went away to Chelsea in gameweek 25 and kept a clean sheet.  The record isn’t great until GW25 as their previous cleanie came in GW13.  However if you are looking for a 5th choice defender or a diferential this GW in your Head-to-Head match up then we think Bournemouth could have the answer.

The Players: It is unlikely that many Bournemouth defenders will be taken in your Draft Fantasy Football league; Nathan Ake being a possible defender taken.  Ake came away with a goal as well as the clean sheet in GW25; taking the defenders season tally to two goals and an assist.  There is plenty of scope elsewhere, Charlie Daniels, Steve Cook and the cheaper Simon Francis will all be guaranteed a place in the starting 11.

The Opposition: Since Paul Lambert has come in, Stoke have seen a mini revival.  4 points from a possible 9 is better than expected, boasting two clean sheets in the past two gameweeks also highlights the possibility of a Stoke clean sheet and a 0-0 draw in this fixture.  This is more likely that a Stoke goal however, upfront has been very much a miss this season, with the midfield duo of Xherdan Shaqiri and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting being the two threats to your Bournemouth cleanie.  Neither are in great form however, and with only 1 away goal in their last 4 away fixtures, we can’t see Stoke getting on the score sheet.

The Prospects: Looking forward, Bournemouth have some excellent fixtures with Huddersfield and Newcastle the next two games for the Cherries.  Then a run of West Ham, Watford, and Crystal Palace come up after two tougher ties against Leicester and Spurs.

Looking Elsewhere

We can’t look beyond West Brom vs Southampton which has the potential for a bore draw written all over it.  For West Brom, Jonny Evans is a doubt, so look to Craig Dawson or Ben Foster if he is available.  The West Brom keeper is cheaper than others and will provide you with an excellent backup option for your Draft Fantasy Football squad.

And finally, if your Draft Fantasy Football match needs something a little bit left field; look no further than Crystal Palace.  Whilst their opponents Newcastle are capable scorers, rumour has it that Mamadou Sakho is to make his long awaited return from injury.  Sakho has a goal and assist to his name in only the 6 games he has featured in.  Not to mention the 2 clean sheets he has kept.  If Sakho is too much of a risk, it is very likely the whole of the Palace defence will be available to you in your Draft Fantasy Football league; wingbacks Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Patrick van Aanholt would be the better options for defensive and attacking returns.
