Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline the best options on a weekly basis.
We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek. Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!
Top Tip: Huddersfield Town
The Team: This week we’re backing Huddersfield Town for a clean sheet as they host Swansea City. The Terriers are without a clean sheet in a while, but they have shown very good form in recent games. They face a Swansea side brimming with confidence, but we’re thinking Huddersfield will be able to shut them out, and there is likely to be plenty of free agents to tap into from the Huddersfield backline. A GW31 fixture at home to Palace is up next, which promotes their prospects.
The Players: The beauty of this Huddersfield punt, is that most of their defenders will be free agents!! Centre back pairing of Zanka and Christopher Schindler are the picks of the bunch, as they are well established in the side and have each gained attacking returns this season. Florent Hadergjonaj is likely to be fielded in the right wing-back position, and he is perhaps the most under the radar option. All of these Chaps have very low ownership statistics across the various Draft League platforms, apart from Schindler who has a very high Togga ownership. We would expect all four of these defenders to play the next few games.
The Opposition: The Swans have been rejuvenated by new manager Carlos Carvalhal, and smashed four goals past a hapless West Ham side last weekend. However, most of Swansea’s goals, and points, have come when playing at the Liberty Stadium. The Ayew Brothers are ones to look out for, as well as the in-form Ki Sung-Yeung, who has recently made our Hot List. However, the lack of height and power in their attack plays into Huddersfield’s hands, as their backline is tall and strong.
The Prospects: Looking forward we would highly recommend picking up a Huddersfield defender for the next set of fixtures. As outlined above, they have a GW31 fixture at home to Crystal Palace, and there is a good chance of a clean sheet in that one too. After GW31, the Terriers face Newcastle, Brighton, and Watford in the next three, which could easily bring further defensive returns.
Newcastle Utd vs Southampton has the potential to be a bore-draw, so it may be worth looking into both of these sides’ backlines. Newcastle are perhaps the better bet here, with Jamaal Lascelles and new goalkeeper Martin Dubravka the stand out options. Lascelles has been in great form in recent weeks and has attacking potential, and Dubravka has put in some great performances since his debut a few weeks ago. We’d expect the rest of the Newcastle backline to be made up of DeAndre Yedlin, Florian Lejeune, and Paul Dummett. In terms of the Southampton defence, Ryan Bertrand and Jack Stephens are the best options, as they offer an attacking threat even if The Saints do concede in this fixture!
Leicester City are also a decent pick for a clean sheet, as they are facing bottom side West Bromich Albion. Harry Maguire will surely be taken in all Draft Leagues, and there has been rotation between Christian Fuchs and Ben Chilwell at the left-back slot in recent weeks. Therefore, we would look towards Wes Morgan or Danny Simpson for a route into the Foxes defence. Morgan has recently returned from injury, and Simpson will be guaranteed to start as Daniel Amartey has been ruled out for a month. Leicester also have a good upcoming fixture list, despite a blank GW31.
