After weeks of build up, GW31 is finally upon us!! As there are only four fixtures this gameweek; we’ve changed the format of the classical ‘Calculating the Cleanie’ to follow the structure of our ‘Punting for Gold’ blogs. In this special version we pick out five defenders that could potentially bring your Draft Fantasy Football team good returns in this all-important gameweek.
The Fantasy Football Chaps have been analysing GW31 for the past month and to help you in your quest for victory in your Draft Fantasy Football leagues, we highly advise you check out our Special Feature article GW31: what’s the deal?! as well as the below defender picks!
Opponent: Stoke (Away)
Ownership: 35% (Togga) / 53% (Draft Fantasy Football)
Prospects: A Fantasy Football Chaps favourite, and a Draft Fantasy Football legend. Baines has had a very low-key season, having been injured for the vast majority of it after starting with two goals and an assist in the opening 12 games. Baines is a set piece specialist, taking control of most dead-ball situations for the Toffees. This gives Baines an advantage over his colleagues as he is considerably more likely to bag a goal from a penalty, or an assist from a corner or free kick. An assist in his comeback game in GW30 to boast; well worth a punt.
Best Alternatives: Seamus Coleman or Michael Keane.
Patrick Van Aanholt
Team: Crystal Palace
Opponent: Huddersfield Town (Away)
Ownership: 25% (Togga) / 18% (DFF)
Prospects: Two goals in the last two gameweeks is a sure sign of the attacking potential van Aanholt has to offer your Draft Fantasy Football team. He has a challenging fixture away to Huddersfield, who have been in good form at home this season, but with such low ownership stats, he is likely to be available in your Draft Fantasy League with good potential to bag a clean sheet or an attacking return.
Best Alternatives: Mamadou Sakho or Jeffrey Schlupp.
Opponent: Watford (Home)
Ownership: 55% (Togga) / 11% (DFF)
Prospects: The Liverpool left-back has really benefited from the injury to Alberto Moreno in the second half of the season, making that position his own. His fine form has also earned him a ‘hot’ rating in our Hot or Cold Draft Fantasy Football player rankings. Of all the defenders we feature in this weeks Calculating the Cleanie blog; Robertson is the most likely to actually keep a clean sheet. Watford have been in atrocious form away from home, not having scored in their past four away trips. If Robertson is available in your Draft Fantasy Football league; he is our main tip for the clean sheet this gameweek!
Best Alternatives: Loris Karius or Trent Alexander-Arnold (although the right-back may be dropped after a poor performance in GW30).
Team: AFC Bournemouth
Opponent: West Bromich Albion (Home)
Ownership: 56% (Togga) / 16% (DFF)
Prospects: The young Bournemouth defender has exceptional attacking potential with two assists and two goals to his name already this season and is rated ‘hot’ on the Hot or Cold Draft Fantasy Football player rankings. The attacking returns are the silver lining as Bournemouth have only kept one clean sheet since GW13. However, the concerns Draft Fantasy Football managers have with the lack of Bournemouth clean sheets should be a less of a concern with bottom of the league West Brom visiting; West Brom have only scored 1 goal in the past 4 away trips.
Best Alternatives: Charlie Daniels or Adam Smith.
Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen
Team: Huddersfield Town
Opponent: Crystal Palace (Home)
Ownership: 38% (Togga) / 11% (DFF)
Prospects: The Huddersfield defender has been a mainstay of an impressive campaign this season. With two assists to his name already, Zanka offers not only a clean sheet but also the potential for an attacking return; particularly from set pieces. With relatively low ownership, and 8 clean sheets to his name so far, Zanka is a fair option for GW31 but also looking ahead; Newcastle, Brighton, and Watford are all up in the next three gameweeks.
Best Alternatives: Christopher Schindler, Florent Hadergjonaj, or Jonas Lossl.

📝 Draft Platform 📝
Here at The Fantasy Football Chaps, we’re proud to be pioneer’s for having a Draft Fantasy Football League that runs COMPLETELY OFFLINE! Check out our article looking into how to make this a reality, and have full control over customising your Draft League!
If this sounds like too much effort, we would highly recommend using an online platform from either the guys at Draft Fantasy or Fantrax. Draft Fantasy uses a scoring system similar to the standard Official FPL game, where as Fantrax mainly uses the more intelligent scoring system made famous by Togga.
