Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline the best options on a weekly basis.
We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek. Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!
Top Tip: Brighton
The Team: Our GW33 tip for a clean sheet is Brighton as they host Huddersfield. Chris Hughton’s Brighton are a big gamble, as they have not kept a clean sheet since GW21. But there is really no better team to face in the Premier League in attempting to change this form; Huddersfield have score only 2 goals in their past 6 away fixtures.
The Players: It is relatively unlikely, given Brighton’s current defensive form, that any Brighton defensive player is taken in your Draft Fantasy Football league. Goalkeeper Matt Ryan is the in-form defensive player for Brighton having saved a penalty in GW30 and GW27. Elsewhere, Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy, and Ezequiel Schelotto are the most likely defenders to be guaranteed a place in the starting 11, with Markus Suttner having dropped out of the starting 11 last gameweek.
The Opposition: Huddersfield were showing some decent form a few weeks ago, but have only scored 7 goals in the past 12 gameweeks, including having drawn a blank in front of goal in the past 4 gameweeks. Players such as Aaron Mooy, Steve Mounie and Alex Pritchard can provide a spark on their day; but it all looks rather flat at the moment.
The Prospects: Looking forward Brighton’s prospects are awful. Tottenham Hottspur, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool are all due to play Brighton in the remaining 6 gameweeks after GW33. There are two double gameweek fixtures (Crystal Palace and Spurs) in GW34 and (Man Utd and Man City) in GW37; but given the opponents, they are practically total write-offs. We would recommend bringing in Matt Ryan as a cheap keeper for this gameweek only. If you have a strong first choice keeper, it might be worth retaining Ryan to free up useful budget for the end of season run-in.
Having successfully backed Leicester City for a clean sheet in our GW32: Calculating the Cleanie, we are once again backing the Foxes as they host Newcastle. The Toon Army have been pretty good in front of goal this season, but away from home goals have not been quite as forthcoming.
Harry Maguire will almost certainly be taken in all active Draft Leagues, so we are looking towards Wes Morgan as our best pick here. The veteran defender is guaranteed to start, and has recently made our Hot List. Elsewhere, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is in sublime form having saved a penalty in GW32. The wingbacks Danny Simpson and and Ben Chilwell are worth a punt and offer potentially attacking returns too!
Looking elsewhere there is a potential clean sheet on offer for Swansea who entertain the basement boys, West Brom. This might be surprising one; but with WBA on the ropes, and having parted company with manager Alan Pardew, things look pretty grim for West Brom. WBA front man Rondon is a threat up front, but Swansea have been resolute in defence of late; having kept 2 clean sheets in the last 5 gameweeks.
