Calculating The Cleanie – GW36

Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline the best options on a weekly basis.

We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek.  Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!

Top Tip:  Newcastle United

The Team:  Our GW36 Top Tip for a clean sheet is Newcastle, as they have been on great form for the last month or so.  The January loan signings of Martin Dubravka, Kenedy, and, to a lesser extent, Islam Slimani, have really paid off!  Before the GW35 loss to Everton, Newcastle had won four games in a row, and they now find themselves in the top half of the table.  Looking solely at their home form, Newcastle have only conceded one goal during the four games that Dubravka has been stationed in goal – and that was against Arsenal.  Therefore, we’re backing them to keep out the bottom side West Brom this weekend.

The Players:  There should be plenty of choices for Draft Fantasy Football Managers among the Newcastle backline.  We expect the back four to be Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, and Dummett, with Dubravka in goal.  DeAndre Yedlin is our top pick, as he’s the Chap that makes our Hot List.  He has attacking potential, as well as clean sheet potential.  Simialrly, Jamaal Lascelles bags himself a fair few goals from set-pieces, so he’s also a great option.  Martin Dubravka has been nothing short of a revelation, as he’s taken over as number one goalkeeper after his loan move in January.  Certainly worth bringing him in if he’s a free agent, and your other keepers have poor GW36 fixtures.  The addition of the commanding keeper has really boosted The Magpies’ clean sheet potential.

The Opposition:  West Bromich Albion are all-but relegated, despite putting in some great displays since Darren Moore took over from Alan Pardew.  A win at Old Trafford followed by a draw at home to Liverpool… great stuff.  However, we’re still backing Newcastle for a clean sheet, despite the increase in The Baggies’ form!  The Magpies should have enough to keep the main man Salomon Rondon under control.

The Prospects:  Looking forward, Newcastle have a double GW37 as they face Watford and Tottenham away, followed by a home fixture against Chelsea in GW38.  Not the best of fixtures, but anything can happen in a double gameweek, and Chelsea are likely to have nothing to play for come the final day of the season.  Investment in The Magpies backline could bring home decent points over the remaining fixtures.

Looking Elsewhere

We’re also looking towards Burnley and Crystal Palace to bring home defensive returns this weekend!

Burnley have surprisingly gone five games without a clean sheet, despite picking up a fair few wins!  James Tarkowski and Kevin Long have managed to bag themselves some attacking returns during this period, however.  This weekend Burnley face Brighton at home, and will surely bring home a classic Burnley clean sheet!!  The back four is likely to be Lowton, Tarkowski, Long, and Stephen Ward, with Nick Pope likely to keep his place in goal.  We would recommend avoiding the goalkeeper position if possible, as there is a slight chance that Tom Heaton will be given a few games as the season comes to a close.  Therefore, take your pick from that back four, as The Clarets look to shut out Pascal Gross and co.

Crystal Palace face an out of sorts Leicester side this weekend, and will be hoping to build upon their clean sheet from GW35.  The Eagles haven’t been on great form at the back, as they have kept two clean sheets in the fives games since star defender Mamadou Sakho returned to the side.  Palace have pretty much a fully fit squad at the moment, after suffering horrible luck with injuries this season.  The back four is likely to be Joel Ward, Tomkins, Sakho, and Van Aanholt, with Hennessey in goal.  Sakho and Van Aanholt are our top picks, as they offer bonus points and attacking points potential respectively.   Leicetser have been on pretty poor form lately, and its a big call to suggest Palace will be able to keep out Vardy and Mahrez… they have a decent chance of doing so, and have a nice little run of fixtures to end the season!
