Calculating The Cleanie – GW37

Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline the best options on a weekly basis.

We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek.  Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!

Top Tip:  Swansea City

The Team:  Our GW37 Top Tip for a clean sheet is Swansea, as they have a double gameweek of bang average opponents.  With Bournemouth (away) and Southampton (home), the Swans Premier League survival all comes down to GW37.  Although Swansea have not kept a clean sheet in five gameweeks; Bournemouth’s away goal scoring record this season has been poor (17 goals in 18 games).  Southampton, have only taken 5 points from a possible 21 over the last seven gameweeks; recording 6 goals in this time.

The Players:  There should be plenty of choices for Draft Fantasy Football Managers among the Swansea backline.  We expect the defence to be made up from back four to be Naughton, van der Hoorn, Mawson, and Olsson, with Fabianski in goal.  However, with Fernandez now confirmed as fully fit, he is most likely to slot into a back three, with Naughton and Olsson operating as wing-backs.  Martin Olsson is our top pick, as he offers attacking potential on top of the clean sheet.  Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has been somewhat of an under the radar player this season.  Ranked 5th in the league for overall points scored, Fabianski offers bonus/save point potential as well as the clean sheet.

The Opposition:  Both Southampton and Bournemouth are in a seriously poor run of form; with Southampton taking 4 points and scoring 6 goals in the past 5 gameweeks, and Bournemouth with 2 points and scoring 5 goals in the same period.  There are two players of note for the owners of Swansea defenders to be wary of, Josh King (Bournemouth) and Dusan Tadic (Southampton); who have both contributed 3 goals in the last 5 gameweeks for their sides.

The Prospects:  Looking to the final gameweek of the season, Swansea entertain fellow relegation rivals Stoke, in what could be a tense encounter.  Stoke have been poor on the road all season and going on current form we would not expect that to change in the final gameweek.  If Swansea get it right, we could be looking at another potential clean sheet in GW38.

Looking Elsewhere

Newcastle and Crystal Palace

A slight difference this week, as we provide you with two sides that have clean sheet potential, but we’ve also picked out two chaps that have clean sheet potential.

With regards to the two sides we think you should look towards for a clean sheet; Newcastle and Crystal Palace!

Newcastle have a double gameweek in GW37, although one of the gameweek opponents will be golden boot chasing Harry Kane and his in-form Spurs team.  However, the other double gameweek fixture for Newcastle is of serious interest; Watford.  There should be plenty of choices for Draft Fantasy Football Managers among the Newcastle backline.  We expect the back four to be Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, and Dummett, with Dubravka in goal.  DeAndre Yedlin is our top pick, as he’s the Chap that makes our Hot List.  He has attacking potential, as well as clean sheet potential.  Watford have been in horrendous form of late.  They haven’t scored a goal in three gameweeks, having taken only 2 points from a possible 21 points.

Crystal Palace face a relegation threatened Stoke side this weekend, and will be hoping to build upon their impressive 5-0 win over Leicester in GW36.  The Eagles haven’t been on great form at the back this season, but they have kept three clean sheets in the six games since Mamadou Sakho returned to the side.  We expect the back four to be Joel Ward, Tomkins, Sakho, and Van Aanholt, with Hennessey in goal.  Sakho and Van Aanholt (who’s form we have ranked as ‘hot’ in our Draft Fantasy Football player rankings) are our top picks, as they both offer bonus points and attacking points potential respectively.  Stoke have only scored three goals in five gameweeks, taking 3 points from a possible 15.

Benjamin Mendy and Danilo (both Manchester City)

In a slight change to normal, we have decided against providing you chaps with another team, and instead we would like to focus on two players in particular.  Benjamin Mendy and Danilo of Premier League champions Manchester City.

Whilst it is obvious that in all active Draft Fantasy Football Leagues, Manchester City defenders will be taken, it is unlikely that many rival managers will have taken a punt on either Danilo or MendyDanilo is less of a certain punt, given that his competition for a starting place is England right back Kyle Walker.  However Walker is carrying a knock and two games in one weekend might prove to be too much.  Mendy, a player we feature in our ‘Hot or Cold’ player rankings is on the other hand an interesting proposition.  Having paid big bucks for Mendy in the summer, only for him to miss the entire season injured; we are certain Pep will want to see what his star left back can do, now that he is fit.

The opposition are Huddersield and Brighton, both at home.  Neither side are renowned for their goal scoring capability (Huddersfield scoring 2 goals in 7 gameweeks and Brighton scoring 6 goals in 7 gameweeks).  Expect both Mendy and Danilo to play at least one of the two games in GW37 and to be front runners for clean sheets.
