Calculating The Cleanie – GW1

Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline the best options on a weekly basis.

We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek.  Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!

Top Tip:  Bournemouth

The Team: Bournemouth entertain Premier League new boys Cardiff in the opening gameweek of the 2018/19 season.  Out of all the newly promoted sides, Cardiff are the least impressive in front of goal and with this being a home game for the Cherries we can’t look beyond them for a cleanie.

The Players: Bournemouth have not got a full defensive lineup available to them with new man Diego Rico suspended. Nathan Ake (34% DFF ownership) has recovered from the knock sustained in pre-season.  Of the other Bournemouth chaps: Steve Cook (3% DFF), Charlie Daniels (17% DFF), and Simon Francis (0% DFF) are all good punts. For a chance at some attacking returns Tyrone Mings (0% DFF) who spent most of 2017/18 out injured will have a point to prove, but is more of a gamble as he is less certain to start.  Depending on your goalkeeping situation, we would highly recommend Asmir Begovic (39% DFF).  Ideally suited as your reserve keeper, Begovic is a guaranteed starter for the Cherries.

The Opposition: Out of all the newly promoted sides, Cardiff were the least impressive in front of goal last season and although they’ve strengthened; it still looks to be a little bit weak.  Bobby Reid who joins from Bristol City, was on fire last season scoring 19 goals and in Junior Hoilett Cardiff have Premier League experience.  But other than these two chaps, we think the Cardiff attack looks a little blunt.

The Prospects: The opening 10 fixtures are not the worst for Bournemouth, facing only one top 6 side (Chelsea) in their first 6 games.

Looking Elsewhere: Brighton

If you have gone all out Bournemouth already, or you really don’t fancy the Cherries, we would also highly recommend taking a look at Brighton this weekend.  Impressive in their debut Premier League season with a solid defence, Brighton travel to Watford.  Watford have lost last seasons key player Richarlison and their new star attacking outlet Gerard Deulofeu is a doubt for the game; significantly weakening the Watford attack.

In defence for Brighton, if the likes of Lewis Dunk (11% DFF), Shane Duffy (7% DFF), and new wing back Bernardo (1% DFF) are available, then it would be well worth considering them as a 4th or 5th choice defensive option.  In goal, Mathew Ryan (45% DFF) is an ideal reserve keeper option too for when your main chap has a challenging fixture.

If you decide Brighton are the way to go for a cheeky cleanie this gameweek, a word of warning; check the up and coming fixtures because they aren’t the best.  Maybe a one gameweek wonder.

Looking Elsewhere: Shaw and Aurier

Looking elsewhere, this gameweek we are moving away from a 3rd team and instead picking out two chaps that were possibly not picked up in your draft.  Unless serious injuries occur, neither Luke Shaw nor Serge Aurier are going to play full seasons and as a result they are not the most ideal picks for a Draft Fantasy Football side.

However both Shaw (18% DFF) and Aurier (48% DFF) are set to benefit in the opening gameweek, maybe the opening two gameweeks, as their rivals for a starting position have returned late from a post World Cup holidays.  Shaw and Manchester United play hosts in the opening fixture to a Jamie Vardy-less Leicester, whereas Aurier and Spurs travel north to visit Newcastle who have struggled to add depth and quality to their attack this summer.

So if your focus is on GW1, both Shaw and Aurier could be short term but big impacting defensive options for excellent differentials.
