Calculating The Cleanie – GW7

Streaming defenders is an essential tactic in Draft Fantasy Football, so we’re here to outline useful hints and tips on a weekly basis.

We pick out the best options for a clean sheet to be found in a Premier League defence with potentially low ownership, as well as players who look set to start for a top 6 side on a given gameweek.  Pick up a free agent from one of these sides to give your team a better chance of victory!

We use the ownership statistics as per Draft Fantasy, with the rules being each player we highlight is required to have ownership of 30% or below.

Top Tip:  Burnley

The Team:  This week we’re backing the Burnley boys for a clean sheet as they travel to Cardiff in Sunday’s only fixture.  Whilst it’s been a tough season so far for Burnley, last GW6’s 4-0 thumping of the in form Bournemouth suggests that Burnley are getting back to their sublime form from last season.

The Players:  Given their early season form; it’s pretty likely that the majority of the Burnley defence will be available in your Draft Fantasy Football League.  As we suggested in our Burnley team profile, we expect; Hart (35% ownership, Draft Fantasy Football) to play in goal, with Lowton (7% DFF), Mee (17% DFF), Tarkowski (47% DFF), and Taylor (1% DFF).  If all are available, we’d perhaps suggest going with Lowton or Taylor; as their positions as wing backs will present greater opportunities for attacking returns.

The Opposition:  Cardiff have been the whipping boys in the opening rounds having only picked up two points in the opening 6 gameweeks.  But as for the Burnley clean sheet; the most telling statistic is that Cardiff have only scored 3 goals in their 6 fixtures (2 of which came in one game).  There has been very little to talk about where Cardiff’s attack is concerned and as such there is nobody of note to fear; midfielders Ward and Camarasa have accounted for two of their teams goals so far, with central defender Bamba the other.

The Prospects:  It doesn’t look particularly great on the horizon for Burnley.  Aside from Cardiff in GW7 and Huddersfield in GW8; Burnley will face Manchester City and Chelsea in consecutive weeks.

Alternative Choice: Wolves

If Burnley are quite for you, we’d suggest taking a look towards Wolves.  Not only have Wolves become everyone’s “second” side, but they are playing entertaining football and grinding out results.

The results have been largely built on some solid defensive displays; with Boly (21% DFF), Bennett (1% DFF) and Coady (2% DFF) impressive in there central defensive roles and wing backs Doherty (8% DFF) and Jonny (5% DFF) offering additional attacking returns.  Naturally we’d always advise looking to wing backs given their potential for attacking returns, but Boly has returned a goal also.

In terms of their GW7 opponents, Southampton, this season has been a mixed bag and they place a huge emphasis on their summer signing and lead frontman  Ings in attack.  Ings has scored 3 goals in 4 starts this season; he’s Southamptons only attacking threat and if Wolves can shut him down we’d expect the West Midlands side to keep a cleanie.

Looking Elsewhere: Rose and Delph

Looking now towards specific players who could be targeted this weekend, we firstly can’t look past Danny Rose of Spurs, their opposition: Huddersfield.

We think Rose (59% DFF) is the man to target given his lower ownership score in comparison to his Spurs teammates.  If you can get your hands on the England left back, we think he is guaranteed to start against struggling Huddersfield (who have only scored 3 goals in the opening 6 games this season) as he sat out the midweek League Cup game, with rotation rival Davies playing the full match and performing poorly.

If Rose has already gone, why not roll the dice on Manchester City defender Fabian Delph (26% DFF).  Delph is surprisingly only owned by a small proportion of Draft Fantasy Football managers given he is absolutely guaranteed to play in Mendy’s absence through injury.  Its not just the certainty of playing, but the fact Manchester City host Brighton, a team that has only scored 1 goal in their previous two appearances against this Manchester City side.

As a side note, we also still have no idea how serious the injury Mendy sustained is.  He missed the whole of last season due to injury, so picking up Delph now might not only be short term.
